Portugal’s first-surfed and often best beach break, 15 minutes outside Lisbon city center. It offers barreling, fast, and powerful waves with bigger swells. On smaller days, it’s also perfectly suitable for beginners and less experienced surfers. The beach is about a half-mile long, flanked on the western end by a flat rock reef and on the east by Forte São Julião da Barra. The waves from June to September are fairly inconsistent, but from fall to spring you can count with great and consistent waves. The waves are highly dependent on shifting sandbanks, so there are many peaks along the beach with both lefts and rights. It can be surfed at all tides, but less water is normally better. Since Carcavelos is so close to Lisbon, you can expect it to be crowded in and outside the water. If the waves at Carcavelos are too big for your surf level, its neighbor Torre Beach can offer fun conditions.

Sand
This is a small beach just around the corner (on the other side of the fortress) of the famous Carcavelos beach. This surf spot is more sheltered and therefore needs a big swell to start working. If Carcavelos is maxing out, there is a good chance that Torre has a decent wave. Although not the best wave in this region, a nice righthander can roll in from the rocks on the west side of the beach. Depending on the sand banks and swell direction, you can also find other peaks more toward the center of the beach. Since the bottom is all sand, you don’t need to worry about hitting reefs or rocks.

Sand
Situated on the west side of a beach called São Pedro de Estoril, you can find a long and mellow righthander formed on a point break. It is a fun wave that is a favorite amongst longboarders and less experienced surfers. With more swell and the right swell direction, this righthander can connect all the way to the inside with a section called ‘Esquerda da Rocha’ (the rock’s left). There is also another surf break called Bafureira on the other side of the bay.

A special spot for Lisbon surfers when swell doesn’t wrap into the city breaks. Guincho is close to Cabo da Roca (the most western point of continental Europe). It is a long, open beach that is rarely flat, but it’s also exposed to wind – hence its popularity as a summertime windsurfing haunt. However, when the wind calms down, Guincho is actually one of the best beach breaks in the region. This surf spot can work with all tides, depending on the position of the sand banks. But low to mid tide is normally your best bet, when long, reeling lefts and rights form around shifting banks. The waves are suitable for beginners on smaller swells but will get very powerful when the size increases. Be careful, there can be strong rip currents. Watch out for the rocks in the middle of the beach! If Guincho is too crowded, it might be worth checking the smaller bay just south of Guincho called Cresmina.

Sand
This is a large stretch of sandy beach with multiple peaks that work with different tides. Since the beach is very exposed, it picks up lots of swell, but it’s also very sensitive to wind. Low to mid tide is best, with peaks along the beach. High tide can be heavy with sections of shore dumps. Line-ups will be busy when good, but there’s room to spread out. Praia Pequena Beach – an extension of the beach to the north – often holds quieter waves.

Sand
A popular destination for the Lisbon surf community. This huge expanse of sand is home to some quality waves for all surf levels. The northern stretch has regular groynes that trap sand and help sculpt reliable sandbars. Waves are either long walls for top-to-bottom surfing, or short and hollow. Can be heavy in bigger swells. Further south, the crowds thin and water quality improves. Costa da Caparica can work all year round and at all tides.

Sand
Praia Pequena is located just north of its bigger brother Praia Grande. It’s a smaller beach with fewer peaks, but the surf is quite consistent and the vibe is often chiller. It also provides more shelter from the northern winds, which means cleaner conditions during the summer months. It can work on all tides; the best tide depends on the sand banks. Around mid-tide is usually your best bet.

Just south of Praia do Guincho, there is a smaller and less-known beach called Cresmina. This surf spot is a mixture of a beach and reef break with a left on the south end of the beach and other peaks on the north side. Cresmina works with similar conditions as Guincho. It is very exposed to all the elements of the Atlantic Ocean but is a bit more sheltered from the wind. It’s worth checking, especially since it’s normally less crowded than its bigger brother.
